He is not named on the Newmarket War Memorial

Born in Balsham in Q4-1896 [Newmarket 3b:530] to Arthur and Mary Anne HOWE (née GUYMER), later of 48 Nat Flatman Street, Newmarket.

1901 census...Arthur [5] was at Nat Flatman Street, Newmarket with his father Arthur [40] a groom born Kirtling Green, his mother Mary [40] born West Wratting, his sisters Ethel[11] born Newmarket, and Annie [9] born Balsham, together with brother John[2] born Newmarket.

1911 census...Arthur [15] a paper deliverer was still with the same family unit, still at 48 Nat Flatman Street.

He was married in St Martin's Church, Exning on 28th February-1917 to Ada Ethel CHALLICE (b.29-1-1897), they lived at Landwade. Ada later married Thomas AKERMAN of Oxford Street, Exning, in 1921.

His son Arthur William who was born just before his father's death, on 4-6-1917, also died in war, as a prisoner of war of the Japanese in Burma in 1943


The 1st Essex had 24 killed on 20th November (only one known grave) during the Battle of Cambrai. 8 died on 21st and on 22nd this was further reduced to 7 ( only two known graves), before the battalion was relieved by the Lancashire Fusiliers and went into rest at Marcoing.

It is not known why his name is not on the War Memorial, perhaps as he had moved to Exning when he got married and was on the memorial there.



No known grave - Arthur is commemorated on the Cambrai Memorial, Louverval, France.Ref: panels 7 & 8
and also on the Roll of Honour of All Saints School, Newmarket and on the Exning memorial.
